Steel Painting Essentials: Transforming Rusted Steel with Ease

At Kennedy Painting, we don't just paint surfaces; we enjoy restoring and bringing them back to life. Saint Phillips United Church of Christ in Affton, Missouri requested our professional exterior painting services to restore the steel cross on the top of the church. We were grateful for the opportunity to revitalize a weathered steel cross that holds not only a physical presence but also a significant piece of history.

We’d like to take you through each step of the exterior steel cross-restoration project. Our commitment to excellence goes beyond a simple coat of paint – it's about preserving the past while ensuring a long-lasting vibrant future.

First step: Sanding, Cleaning, and Prepping

First things first, we rolled up our sleeves and got down to the nitty-gritty – sanding and cleaning. The cross had weathered its fair share of storms, so we gave it some much-needed attention. Armed with a new wire wheel, we went to town sanding away rust and peeling paint. Every nook and cranny got its due detailed attention- until we effectively removed the layers of rust and build-up.

Primed for Perfection: Kem Kromik Primer

Next up, is the magic of primer. We opted for the trusty PSX Kem Kromik Primer, which does wonders in creating a sturdy foundation. One coat was all it took to prepare the cross for its vibrant transformation. It's not just about slapping on paint; it's about setting the stage for a masterpiece.

Painting, Painting, and More Painting: Alkyd Urethane Enamel

With the priming done, we were ready to jump into the real fun – painting! The Alkyd Urethane Enamel stole the spotlight and for a good reason. Two coats of this wonder formula were layered on, each brushstroke infused with dedication and artistry. We started with the detailed bits, making sure every curve and line got its due share of color.

The Finishing Touches: Protecting the Roof and Clean Sweep

We're all about attention to detail, and that extends to the project's surroundings too. Before we let the paint fly, we covered the roof to shield it from any accidental splatters. And when the final coat was applied, it was time for a thorough inspection. We removed the protective covers, giving the surroundings a clean sweep to bid adieu to any paint droplets and debris.

The BIG Transformation

And just like that, what was once a tired steel cross became a symbol of renewed beauty. The layers of PSX Kem Kromik Primer and Alkyd Urethane Enamel not only safeguard it from the elements but also pay homage to its storied history. With exterior painting, steel restoration, and Affton painting skills in our toolbox, this project turned out to be a true labor of love.

So there you have it, – a small peek into our journey of restoring and painting a steel cross that's not just a physical structure but a piece of living history. Stay tuned for more inspiring projects, tips, and tricks right here at Kennedy Painting. Until then, keep those paint brushes dipped and your creativity flowing!
